Carousels Campaign Fund Committee
People for Parks has formed a Carousels Campaign Fund Committee. The committee is looking at how to increase public support and awareness of Raleigh's two historic carousels.
The City of Raleigh has allocated funds for assessments and designs for new carousel houses for the Herschell Carousel located in Chavis Park and the Dentzel Carousel located in Pullen Park. Members of People for Parks have been advocating for improvements to these two local treasures for several years.
We have received our first corporate donation to the fund from Gotta Laugh Games.
From the Press Release:
Gotta Laff Games, Inc.,
(www.gottalaffgames.com)
a traditional board and card game company based in Apex, N.C., recently donated proceeds from the summer wholesale orders of the company's flagship game, "Are You Phrazy?", to People For Parks. The $700 is earmarked for preservation and renovation of the two antique carousels in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Raleigh is one of a few American cities that is home to two vintage carousels. One is a rare Dentzel "Menagerie" carousel from 1912. It's one of only 14 still operating in all of North America.
In May, Gotta Laff Games celebrated its one-year anniversary at Pullen Park in front of the Dentzel carousel. The carousel was chosen because it represents old-fashioned fun where kids and adults can enjoy being together and laughing. Gotta Laff Games was also created to bring families and friends together through laughter, not with televisions, DVDs and video games, but with traditional board and card games.
"At Gotta Laff Games, we believe laughter is the key to great relationships between family members and friends, " said Gotta Laff Games Founder and President Dave Rockenbaugh. "I feel honored that we can partner with People For Parks to help preserve the true treasures we have in these two antique carousels. For decades, they have brought generations of families and friends together."
Mr. Rockenbaugh added, "I challenge other area companies, big, small and really big, to step up and contribute. Raleigh can't let these joy-inducing masterpieces ever disappear."
People for Parks board chairperson, Marsha Presnell-Jennette, accepted the donation on behalf of the grassroots, non-partisan, non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the community's enjoyment of, involvement in, and stewardship of the local park systems in Wake County. The carousel campaign is just one of the many programs created by the organization.
